In my Digital distribution class last Friday we watched a movie entitled Wax or the Discovery of Television Amoung the Bees. Before we watched the film we read some reviewers attempts at summerizing the picture…er at the very least describing how it made them feel. After seeing the movie myself I am convinced I could do no better in trying to convey what this film is and I am not going to try…I will say that it pretty much blew my mind…it was as confusing and unstructured (with a strong suggestion of underlying structure) as real life. When the movie was over I just sat there thinking about it. I have decided that I should recomend it to my freinds…go watch this asap. You can see it by going to the following website:
jefferson.village.virginia.edu/wax/englishStart.html
Basically you will be able to watch the film by clicking on the sqaure in the center of the page…when the quick time movie stops click the arrow to the right of the movie…you watch the whole film this way. It might seem a little odd at first but you get used to it quickly and before long (hopefully) you are so engrossed in the movie that you don’t even notice you are doing it anymore.
I was worried that watching the film this way would be less engrossing. To a poin it is, but not as much as I had expected. I saw the film myself for the first time projected on a huge screen with huge speakers in a dark theatre. There is no way that watching it on a tiny box on my computer screen would create exactly the same effect but it works…the film creates the same mood and thought on my computer as it did in the theatre. There is also the added bonus that you can click on individual frames fo the film for a detailed explination of what the images are and why the director put them there. This proves helpful in getting your head around a film that is a little bit hard to digest. What I mean is the movie really gets you thinking. Its like a puzzle that you can never totally solve, but you can solve it to the point that you are satisfied with your understanding. In my experiance life is like that. To sum it all up…there really is more to this movie than you think…but you are not going to figure out what it is. Just watch it ok?
